New Policy endorsed by council

27 November 2020

We are able to announce that a new Sustainability Policy was endorsed at the council ordinary meeting on 26 November 2020.

This comes after extensive community engagement including face-to-face consultation in shopping centres, Community Reference Groups and at council locations such as the Art Gallery and Queens Park Environmental Education Centre. Shape Your Ipswich was also used to survey the community regarding your thoughts on sustainability.

More than 200 people participated in the community consultation process. The information provided was valuable to shape and inform the Sustainability Policy.

The draft policy was also refined with expert input from council staff across all departments. The result is a Policy which demonstrates council’s commitment to sustainability for the City of Ipswich.

The Sustainability Policy is a recognition that council needs to respond to climate change and contains six key policy principles:

  • Governance and Leadership
  • Responsible Decision-Making
  • Leave a Legacy
  • Sustainable Procurement
  • Efficient Use of Resources
  • Think Global, Act Local

The Sustainability Policy will be the guiding document from which a new Sustainability Strategy will be drafted. We will be seeking comments on the Sustainability Strategy in 2021.

You can read the new Sustainability Policy on the Sustainable Ipswich page of Shape Your Ipswich.
